In the United States, more than 6 million seniors over the age of 65 suffer from dementia, which is equivalent to one in nine seniors with dementia, and more than 70% of them are seniors over the age of 75. In our community, we are also seeing more and more dementia patients. In addition to the aging population, many patients are brought to seek medical professional help after their family members find symptoms. According to statistics, more than 80% of dementia patients stay at home to receive care, most of them are family members, and most of them are daughters. As for the caregivers of dementia patients, two-thirds are women, and one-quarter are "sandwich groups", that is, they need to take care of the elderly over the age of 65 and children under the age of 18 at the same time. Caring for a patient with dementia is not easy. The patient's behavioral problems test the patience of the caregiver at any time. When the patient's condition deteriorates, caregivers may also get questioned by the outside world and can impact their self-confidence. Caregivers of dementia patients have also become a high-risk group for mental illness.

The Care Village project of CCACC Health Center has been concerned with the needs of families with dementia in our Chinese community. This time, with the support of LIVING WELL Center in Maryland, we will conduct workshops for caregivers of dementia patients. The six-week course will be held by Licensed Clinical Social Worker Kate Lu, LCSW-C and Licensed BBC facilitator Ms. Yuhsin Chou . Participants will be able to learn the skills of caring for others and self-care, and through group communication, experience sharing and emotional support. The course will run from 1/11-2/15/2024, every Thursday from 2:30pm to 5:00pm, for six weeks, 2.5 hours per week. The course content will be conducted in English, and registration will start from now on, with a limit of 15 students until full.
